The Art of
Refraction

At McCulley Optix Gallery, we believe in solving problems creatively. That’s pretty much what refraction is—an opportunity to solve a problem. Refraction is the best way to improve your vision without surgery and is the way we determine your prescription.

When light entering the eye isn’t focused correctly on the retina, it results in a refractive error.

Types of Refractive Errors

Myopia (nearsightedness)

When objects far away are blurry, but close-up items are clear, you might have myopia. The condition occurs when the eyeball is too long, or the cornea is too curved.

Hyperopia (farsightedness)

If distant objects are clear and ones closer to your face are blurry, hyperopia might be the culprit. It occurs when the cornea has too little curvature, or light isn’t focused on the right part of the eye.

Astigmatism

An irregularly shaped eye—think more football than basketball—can result in astigmatism. If you have this condition, vision will be out of focus at any distance.

Dr. McCulley and Dr. Motacek are highly experienced with refraction. They will measure the eye’s focusing characteristics using a phoropter. This device places a series of lenses in front of your eyes and helps to determine exactly how a lens must be shaped to correct any vision errors.

Our Technology

Optos Imaging

All of our adult eye exams include advanced retinal imaging. The Optos optomap is an ultra-widefield imaging device that takes high-definition photos of your retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels.

These images provide us with detailed information about your eyes. They help us detect signs of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and much more.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

We use optical coherence tomography to take a non-invasive, cross-sectional image of the retina. The photos allow for a detailed view of the retina’s layers as well as an assessment of the health of the optic nerve.

With a good look at these structures, we can evaluate changes in the eye’s delicate blood vessels to catch diseases like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma in their earliest stages.

iCare Tonometer

This instrument measures the pressure in your eye. We never use a puff of air to measure the pressure! With iCare Tonometry, we can accurately check for eye diseases like glaucoma without putting any drops in the eyes. It is quick, easy, and accurate.

NeuroLens

How Often Should
I Get An Eye Exam?

Dr. McCulley and Dr. Motacek recommend adults have a comprehensive eye exam yearly. If additional risk factors are present, consult our doctors to see if you should be seen more frequently.

If additional risk factors are present, eye exams should happen annually no matter your age group, or at the frequency recommended by your optometrist.

Risk factors might include:

Diabetes
Family history of ocular diseases
Previous eye injury or surgery
High refractive error.

Eye exams are especially important for people who wear contact lenses. It’s important to continually evaluate the fit of the lens, as well as the prescription and any changes in the health of the cornea.
