Fargo’s Home for Optometry
A lot of searches for our eye doctor in Moorhead, MN lead straight to McCulley Optix Gallery, the West Fargo practice Dr. Melissa McCulley has led since 2006. The practice has grown into a spot where thorough vision checkups and a well-stocked eyewear boutique share the same address, all built around this community over the past two decades.
Appointments here move at a human pace, giving you time to actually ask questions instead of rushing through a chart. Kids working through normal vision changes, adults managing blurry vision or contact lenses, and anyone overdue for a checkup all get the same unhurried attention from the team. A stocked optical shop full of frames worth showing off rounds out the visit, so you leave with a clear prescription and eyewear you actually want to wear.

Our Mission
Every appointment works toward one outcome: sending you home seeing clearly and liking what you see in the mirror, the way a good eye doctor visit should feel. Dr. Melissa McCulley shaped this eye doctor’s practice around a simple standard, namely that nobody should walk out unsure about their own eye health. Comprehensive eye exams always leave room for early detection, whether that means flagging the first signs of glaucoma and cataracts or noticing a shift in your contact lenses prescription before you do.
Frames in the optical shop are picked out individually rather than pulled from a mass catalog, so what you wear actually matches how you live. Two decades in, the approach stays the same: steady vision care, straightforward answers, and eyewear built around the person wearing it. That consistency is what turns a single eye doctor visit into a long-term relationship, and it’s why the vision benefits of staying with one practice tend to add up over the years.

Our Services

The Eye Exam Technology Most Offices Don’t Have
Blurry vision is easy to notice. Glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy are not, since many eye diseases progress with little to no symptoms until they’ve already affected your sight, and a simple vision screening isn’t built to catch what a comprehensive exam can.
Between refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia, and diseases that can quietly threaten your sight, a real eye exam does far more than confirm you need a stronger prescription. It gives you an accurate answer and a plan, before a small problem becomes a permanent one.
Is a comprehensive eye exam right for you?
Here’s who should book one, what actually happens in the chair, and why the research says it’s worth the thirty minutes.

Personally Curated Designer Eyewear and Lenses
Cheap frames pinch, warp, or fall apart within a year. Uncoated lenses scratch, glare under headlights, or never quite feel right no matter how many times you push them back up your nose. Most people chalk this up to bad luck rather than low-quality materials, but the fix is usually simpler than expected: frames actually built for your face, paired with lenses coated to handle real life.
Hand-selected eyewear is built around how you actually see, move, and look, which is part of why McCulley Optix Gallery was named an Honorable Mention for America’s Finest Optical Retailers by INVISION Magazine, a recognition built on design, story, and patient experience.

Contact Lenses Fitted To Your Exact Prescription, Every Time
Reusing the same pair of contacts week after week, even once they start to feel dry, cloudy, or irritating. Skipping a proper cleaning routine because life gets busy. Wearing lenses that were never properly fitted to your eyes in the first place.
These habits are exactly how contact lens wearers end up with infections, discomfort, or corneal damage. Daily disposables solve this at the source, with a fresh, sterile lens every single day and no case to clean or solution to top off.
Could daily disposables work for you?
A rundown of who tends to switch, what actually goes on your eye, and why fresh keeps beating reused.

Finally Treating Dry Eye At The Actual Cause
Stinging, burning, or gritty sensations you’ve just learned to live with. Red, watery eyes that make no sense given how dry they feel. Discomfort that flares up with screen time, wind, or contact lens wear. Dry eye disease is one of the most common, and most under-treated, eye conditions out there, in part because people assume nothing can be done about it. It can be treated, and most patients feel real relief once the underlying cause, whether that’s the oil, water, or mucus layer of the tear film, is identified.
Is dry eye treatment worth exploring?
Here’s who tends to be affected, what a real evaluation involves, and why symptoms are worth addressing sooner rather than later.

A Certified MiSight Provider For Your Child’s Myopia
Squinting at the whiteboard. Sitting closer and closer to the TV. Complaining of headaches after school. It’s easy to write these off as habits, but they’re often early signs of myopia, a condition that doesn’t just make distance vision blurry.
Left unmanaged, myopia can progress year after year, and high myopia raises the risk of serious conditions later in life, including retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma. Our myopia management program is built to change that trajectory.

Same-Day Lens Upgrades, No Extra Appointment Needed
Glare from headlights on a night drive. Smudges and scratches that build up within weeks. Eyes that feel exhausted after a full day at a screen. A basic lens corrects a prescription and stops there, which means it won’t do anything about any of this.
None of it means something’s wrong with your eyes. It just means your lenses were never built to handle it. Lens upgrades, alongside the rest of our specialty eye care services, are what separates glasses that just work from glasses that actually make daily life easier.
Are lens upgrades worth adding to your next pair?
Here’s who tends to ask about these upgrades, what’s actually on the menu, and why it’s worth adding at the point of purchase.
Meet the Doctor
Growing up in the Fargo area shaped how Dr. Melissa McCulley approaches every patient who walks through her door, and it’s a large part of why she chose to practice right where she started out. Her academic record includes two honors distinctions, one from Boston College in pre-medical studies and another in optometry, earned at the Southern College of Optometry. Between finishing school and opening her own practice, she spent four years working within an ophthalmology department at the University of Minnesota, sharpening her skills with complex contact lens fittings and patients coping with limited vision. That background still shows in how patiently she works through even a routine visit today, the kind of pace patients don’t always expect from an eye doctor.
She now carries the CooperVision Best Practices Honoree title, a nod to consistent clinical standards rather than a one-time achievement. Away from the office, she’s usually got a paintbrush, a novel, or something baking, and at home she shares life with two daughters and her husband, Rial. Ask a longtime patient what stands out most, and they’ll likely mention how much she remembers between visits, right down to small details most people forget they even mentioned. Plenty of that day-to-day care also comes from the rest of the staff, who work alongside her at every visit.

FAQs
What towns near West Fargo does your practice serve?
Patients travel in from West Fargo, Fargo, and Moorhead, MN, along with several smaller communities scattered across the metro, all looking for the same eye doctor. Comprehensive eye exams, vision care, and the full optical shop experience draw people from well outside city limits. The practice has built those connections gradually since 2006, one referral and one returning family at a time. No matter where you’re driving in from, the office sits close to Veterans Boulevard and is simple to reach by phone or online. Plenty of patients happily drive a little further once they’ve found an eye doctor worth sticking with.
How did this eye doctor's office get its start?
McCulley Optix Gallery opened its doors in 2006, staying independent and woman-led from day one through today, with the same eye doctor at the helm the entire time. Dr. Melissa McCulley built the practice from scratch rather than buying into an existing franchise or chain. Two decades of steady growth followed, driven mostly by word of mouth between neighbors and coworkers. That kind of organic growth tends to happen when patients genuinely trust the eye doctor treating them.
What actually happens during a first visit here?
A first visit usually starts with a conversation about your vision history before any testing begins, giving this eye doctor a sense of your concerns from the start. Filling out new patient forms ahead of time helps that conversation move faster once you’re in the chair. A comprehensive eye exam then covers your overall eye health using modern equipment, without dilation drops or an uncomfortable air puff. If new eyewear is on your list, there’s time built in afterward to browse the optical shop at your own pace. Nothing about the process feels rushed from start to finish.
Is this eye doctor a good fit for young kids?
Yes, pediatric eye care is treated as seriously as any adult exam on the schedule. Pediatric eye exams are available starting at a young age, and myopia management is offered for school-age kids through a certified MiSight program. Appointments are paced to keep younger patients comfortable rather than rushed through testing. Many families end up bringing multiple generations to the same eye doctor over time.
What's the simplest way to schedule a visit?
Booking online through the scheduler tends to be the fastest option for most patients who already know which eye doctor they want to see. Calling or texting the office directly works just as well, especially if you have questions before committing to a time slot. Urgent situations, like sudden vision loss or an eye injury, should always go straight to a phone call rather than the online form. Staff typically respond quickly and try to fit patients in as soon as the schedule allows.
